What is Music Theory?
Music as an idea has existed for many, many years, even pre-dating our own recorded human history. Historical records suggest music could be as old as 40,000 years, with some speculating that it may even be older. Over the course of the history of music, patterns began to emerge. Composers would write music in specific ways, follow certain rules, and even break those to expand on what music could be. Music as a concept has evolved into what we know today, but how and why does it work the way it does?
Music Theory is comparable to the "Science" of music; it explains why music sounds the way it does and how to write it, what we can learn and reproduce from other artists, and how we as artists can express ourselves. It encompases basic ideas such as how to read music and rhythms all the way to larger concepts like part writing, 4+ note harmony, and orchestration. Whether you are new to music and just appreciate cool songs, or you play multiple instruments and have already written music, this class welcomes you with open arms!
